He spent his hole life wainting to fly because he was afraid, and when he finally decide to do it, his flight crash.
The phrase above continue with "Well, isn't this nice." and this is verbal irony, because the situation it isnt nice, it is quite horrible.
"A traffic jam when you're already late" Situational irony. You are very delayed going somewhere and you took a traffic jam which makes you more late of what you just are.

For me the most ironic one is the one that says "An old man turned ninety-eight, he won the lottery and died the next day" because its like, not always, and not everyone has the good luck of winning the lottery. And its ironic how this man it seems to had all the good luck, and then in a flash it appears that its the man with less luck on the world.
I think that the significance of all this ironics phrases that appear along the song, are showing anger. Because i can noticed that the singer is constantly repeating the phrase "Isnt it ironic?" like saying that this sort of thing cant happend. Its like she suffered from some ironic situations, and she wants to reflect on this song why this sort of thing can happend, why if, as the song says, they are ironic.
